We could do that. The north side is where it's at!

I like going the other way - away from the beach. The road there is great and easily my favorite part of the island.

The intake came in the mail yesterday. I'll be able to do all the recommendations on Friday evening, probably.

I was pretty nervous about the delivery, though. My mailbox was broken into the day before yesterday and I thought they had gotten away with a different package I was expecting. Turns out they broke in before the postal carrier came by, so they hung onto my mail until yesterday. I still had to file a police report and have the lock re-keyed.

There wasn't a note about the mail being held onto and I was not happy. My daughter said she'll find the person who stole my package and make them give it back and at first I said "no, that's ridiculous," but then it hit me that the intake hose was coming so I told her maybe she SHOULD just hang out in the driveway and she sees someone run away with a box that has red tape on it to scream like hell.

In the end, my mail came without incident, so that's good.

OK, so today I pulled the carb off and installed the 80 jet again thinking I'll go smaller and work up. I put the case back on the jets and then took off the throttle needle cover to remove the shim. When I put the needle back in and twisted the carb to start re-installing it, I noticed in passing - really quickly - that I could see the plastic housing for the throttle needle through the intake tube. This was the first time I ever monkeyed with the throttle needle when the carb was off and well-lit.

And then I noticed that the bottom of the housing was a semi-circle. I had never noticed that before and I had also never noticed that the semi-circle makes a channel in the intake tube. But I DID notice that the tube was twisted so half of the channel was basically blocked.

Seemed wonky to me.

I texted Tanuki to ask him if the housing needed to be blocking the channel or turned so it was all open and he said he thought it needed to be open but would confirm with a carb he had at home. But his memory was good enough for me to start experimenting and I put everything back together and started it up. It sounded much better. Smoother.

I took it for a drive and it was INFINITELY better. The acceleration was much faster, the throttle was much more steady. GPS confirmed a top speed of 41 and it didn't smell as strongly of gas. It was less jerky and allowed WAY more finesse on the throttle. Previously, it was almost like it was either trying to accelerate or trying to stall and that was all.

Oh yeah! No more stalling! It's absolutely nuts how relaxing it is to ride something so smooth and not have to worry about stalling at every stop.

Ugh. To think this whole time it was because I didn't put the throttle needle housing back the way it needed to be. A head-smacking error indeed!

I'm definitely not the type to hold on to a dumb mistake if it means others can learn from it! ;-)

:banger:

Glad to hear that you got her going! That's a great top speed for a ruck without any CVT work or an aftermarket CDI! I'm happy that you took everyone's advice here. Now get out there and enjoy the road. :highfive:

Yep! I'm stoked just to be able to ride to work again!

Thanks for all the help, folks. I couldn't appreciate it more. And I'm sure I'll need more in the future. ;-)

I took the Ruck out for a drive yesterday and topped it out again at 41, but I noticed that there was some popping in the exhaust when the throttle was wide open and the speed was hovering around 40. Normal?

Also, it feels like there's some slight occasional pulling where I'm not slowing down on the throttle and the bike kind of... I don't know... hiccups, I suppose. Like it wants to slow down and then realizes there was no input to do so, so it spins back up to where it's supposed to be. It's a really quick thing, though. Over and done in less than a second, but I can feel it.

And it's stalled twice. That's way down from the normal count, but more than when it was stock.

Does this sound like the jet is too small and I need to bump it up to the next size? I'm at a mechanical level where I would describe most of this as magic, but was thinking that it might be running a bit lean.

Couldn't hurt to try and go up a jet size. But there is a good chance that you are just hitting your rev limiter. And the stalling probably just means you need to adjust the idle screw just a tiny bit more. Took me a couple of rides to find that sweet spot where it would idle without stalling or without revving too high. But I haven't had to touch it in months now and I ride at least 4 days a week if the weather allows.
