PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2016 9:34 pm
Hello again! This thread will be all about my newest project, a 1987 Honda Aero 50. The plan is to swap an aero 125 engine onto the 50 frame and do some refurbishing along the way.

I was lucky enough to find this aero 50 for only $60, craigslist find. It runs but is making internal noises, maybe a crank bearing. The previous owner over sprayed it with stain while spraying his fence, torn seat and cracked plastics. But for being 30 years old and nearly complete I can't complain much.

Here's the donor power plant prior to disassembly, a 1984 Honda Aero 125 I picked up for $100.

I'll do my best to repair all the plastics, maybe someday I'll find replacements in matching white. :meh:

First test fit of the nh125, swap looks doable.

always wonder about this stage of the swap. What are your main goals? bring it in to eliminate
the space or are you thinking about how to make use of the empty space (gas tank expansion).
How important is the rear shock mount? Just wondering- thank you for bringing us along for the ride.
Love watching you work thru it.

I've been thinking a lot about how I want to do this swap and concluded that I'm not going to do anything too crazy. The motor mock up pic above isn't the angle I want this engine mounted, I was using the stock 50 mount. I'm leaning towards using the parts of nh125 mount, I'll have to cut down a bit.

The shock mounts look like they will land a few inches behind the stock mount, I'll have to plan doing some re-enforcement in that area to strengthen it up.

Started on the motor mount. I cut the nh125 mount down to match length of the stock 50 mount where it bolts to the frame, removed all the brackets. Made my own pieces between the tubes, this should allow me to align the engine.
