Thanks guys! It is at least different, lots of DIY stuff. :meh:

Still tuning after all these years! Realized I hadn't tried a different main jet since I put on the larger-diameter intake runner. Switched from a 78 to an 80 and gained a little pep. Decided that for whatever reason, my GET seems to be out of the power band at anything much above 9200 rpm. Switched from 4.8 DPs to 5.25 and it seems to do better overall. Didn't seem to lose any takeoff, either.

12 days later, switched from white Daytona contra to blue Polini, mix of 5.2/5.4 DPs. Makes me :D

File this under :fuck: Still trying different things, and looking for excuses to post something on here.

Both intakes are 1-5/8" ID and both of the filters have the base cut out as much as possible.

This is really embarassing  . Was trying different intake runners and changing some jets. Same things I've done a hundred times. Toward the end of the ride it started running rough and dying at idle. Got it home and checked it out, found that the intake runner wasn't on tight enough and had partially slipped off, causing a massive air leak. Cool, that makes sense and is an easy fix, right? Re-installed the intake runner, made sure it was gudentite this time, and was flabbergasted when it refused to start. Took the carb apart, found a clogged slow jet. OK, weird that both things happened at once, but it's a simple fix. Cleaned out the jet and everything else while I had it off, reinstalled, fully expected it to fire right up. STILL no go! :headbashing:

The fuel pump is working normally. I AM getting spark, and I DO have compression. Won't even pop once, it's like there's no fuel getting to the cylinder. Pulled the plug after cranking the hell out of it, and the plug was bone dry. All I can think of is that a passage in the carb is clogged. Tried everything from idle to WOT while cranking, didn't fire once. (It's NOT the kill switch).

I'm stumped! :pissed: Gonna put the PZ20 on, since it has no electrical connections and was working good when I took it off. If it starts, I'll know it's the carb. If it doesn't start, guess I'll check valve clearance and the other head parts.

Any of this sound familiar? any suggestions? I thought a Gremlin Bell was supposed to prevent shit like this!

Plugged pilot hole? Squirt some fuel in there. Open the throttle with your hand over the air

Well if you had a clogged jet maybe the fuel line is stopped up too?

Seems odd.
Interested to see if your valves are in spec.

Sorry for the no-show. Had to take time out for a sinus infection. :( Feeling much better now. :D

Haven't done much, hooked up the PZ20 and it started, so at least I know the problem IS in the carb. Fuel pump is ok, jets are all clean, must be an internal passage plugged up somewhere. :headbashing:

I have other carbs, just need to decide whether to put on another stock carb or play with the PZ again for a while. Just frustrating that I couldn't figure it out, it's not like I haven't had these carbs apart a zillion times! I blasted every passage with compressed air, must be something stubborn. A can of Gumout Jetspray should do the trick.

Thanks for the responses!

I would like to state, for the record, that I am a complete dumbass! If I have ever given you bad advice, I apologize. After all the dozens of times I have suggested checking valve clearance for hard-starting issues, I failed to take my own advice. :headbashing: Was still having starting problems, FINALLY checked the valve clearance, and once again, the intake was way too tight (actually had negative clearance). In my defense, in the past when I had a valve shim issue, it was a gradual thing over weeks. This time it seemed to happen in a matter of days, so I didn't think that could be the problem.

I'm down to the thinnest shim available. May be time to change the valves, that would be a good winter project. :meh: Maybe I'll get enough C'mas money to buy a set of MNNTHBX's new titanium valves. :XD

Thanks to Crom, Mitra, Derketo, Odin, and Zeus, my Shadow continues to run flawlessly, so I can still get my riding fix. :banger:

Hello, is this thing on? I guess all fads run their course eventually. When I bought my Ruckus, I didn't know it WAS a fad, had no idea sites like TR even existed. Have to say TR greatly enhanced the enjoyment of being a Ruck owner. Sad to see the site on life support, I think when everyone lost all their pics, it was really discouraging. When I think of all the time I spent on my build thread, and now it's basically worthless, it just makes me :headbashing: :pissed:  :chow:  !! Still check in once in a while, still riding, scoot is running as good as or better than ever. Best of luck and happy future to anyone who sees this! :highfive:
