(Photos start on second post, click each one for a full size version)

Some background: My name is Dave. My forum friends call me "DP". I live in San Diego which is perfect for motorcycling year round. One day I was walking past my co-workers cube and saw him checking out a modified Ruck' on Total Ruckus dot com. I thought they were pretty snazzy, so I decided to get one of my own.

I never got around to making a build thread when I first arrived here since I didn't actually build my Ruck myself. I just bought a bunch of parts, hit up my local scooter shop, and had them bolt 'em all on.

All in all, they did a great job. But honestly, should have done everything myself and saved some serious cash. After reading several threads here on the forum and seeing some of the stuff you guys have done, I’ve decided to make some upgrades (namely, a swap). This time, I'm going to man up and do the mods myself.

The obligatory stock Ruck photo:
Image

The gist of what I wanted done:
Image
A) Change stock bolts to black ones, replace with Password washers
B) Fuck the environment.
C) Password bars, stem, and custom JokerMachine bar end mirrors

Image
D) Turn signal & Speedo in the battery box
E) Of course, lowered seat, new exhaust, shave the lights, stretch. The usual stuff.

I ended up Passwording my Ruck out thanks to Brad from Password. Kickstand, license plate relocator, lowered seat and brakelights. I also powdercoated my case gloss black. Figured since I was powdercoating my frame, I might as well do that too. Picked up a Daytona shock from decayism for dirt cheap.

I also went with the TwoBrothers exhaust. It's a little pricey but it sounds pretty awesome. Most people assume I've big bored. Shit son, my big ass is sitting on 50.

One thing that stands out with my Ruck are my mirrors
Image
Joker Machine based out of Riverside does custom Harley parts. I originally bought the mirrors for my motorcycle, but since they were Harley mirrors and I have a Yamaha, they didn't fit. I had them sitting around in a box for about two years. I was on the cusp of selling them when I figured, "Hell, maybe they can fit on my Ruck"

Close up of the LED turnsignals in the battery box. I went with LED to try to match the Password tail light.

The good thing about build threads is that you can see how people fucked up and you can learn to avoid their mistakes. Here's a couple of things that went wrong.

I wanted everything to be blacked out. So replaced all of my standard machine screws with black socket screws. Little did I know, that a touch of humidity would cause them to rust the fuck out.

If you're going to replace your bolts, either paint them or make sure they're weather resistant. :snorkel:

Another thing that went wrong.

Image

It's actually not that bad. Basically, I got rid of my rear fender. Because of that, my engine is getting trashed with all the dirt and rocks I'm kicking up. Most of it is just cosmetic, but I imagine after enough miles it's going to do some damage. For my swap, I think I'm going to fabricate some kind of rear fender.

I wanted to replace the stock grips but I needed some opened ended ones to go with my mirrors. Rather than spending the cash for some good ones, I picked up some cheapo DRCs. After about 500 miles, the grips are turning and falling apart.

I should have thought about how much torque and friction are put on your grips during an everyday ride. Definitely have to replace these with something better.

In anticipation of doing my swap, I've finally ripped off all my plastic. I actually didn't mind it that much except for the part in the front by the battery box because it's super wide in the front. It kind of looks like some stupid ass wings.

Image Image

Yes, that's a cargo net. Because I don't have a tank cover, I needed something to distract from the funky stock gas tank.

Image

A lesson to learn. If you want to save your plastic, drain your gas tank. I tried to do it with gas in the tank. That meant I couldn't disconnect the hose. After about an hour of fiddling around with the plastic and trying to wrangle it out, I got frustrated and cut that bitch out with a knife.

Stupid now that I think about it. I could have sold the plastic to someone that needed it. Not only that, I could have taken the bottom part and kept it to protect the bottom of my gastank.

Most of the guys in San Diego that ride with me have been giving me shit because I've been talking about swapping for months now.

I'm pretty busy with work so it's just a matter of finding time to do it. But here's a preview of what's coming...
