 Post subject: High Torque Starter Motor and Starter Clutch?

To those who have upgraded to a 180cc, have you changed out your starter motor and starter clutch?

I have run my motor without swapping the starter motor or clutch for quite some time, but recently have had issues getting it started. Cleaned the carb, checked fuel/battery/spark. I found that without a spark plug installed the motor just doesn't turn like it use to. I'm thinking maybe its an issue with starter motor, but I can't find anything on TR related to it. But if you look on youtube it seems to be something that people swap or rebuild.

I'm curious to see if anyone else has had issues, or if the stock starter motor has been adequate and reliable for you guys.

I upped to a 170 and had problems starting. It does work, but it would help with rolling forward to get it on a compression cycle. The stock battery would only give me a few tries and then it would die. Turns out the stock battery is just barely enough to GET the 50cc going. When I was at the crawl this year some guys recommended to first swap out the stock battery to the Evo 8 cell and that would most likely fix the problem. So I did that, but also installed a Taida high compression starter motor. Now it starts right up the first time, every time... don't have to give it gas or anything. Just press and it starts idling.

I think the issue was mostly with the battery not having enough power to push the motor to start it. The starter motor didn't hurt (plus its a cool polished chrome and looks really good). Prolly would have worked fine with just swapping the battery. Never touched the starter clutch.

But in the meantime, you can roll the bike or turn the varilator to get it on a compression stroke and that will help get it started.
