Post subject: 150cc gy6 swap? - What UK donor should I use?
PostPosted: Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:21 am
The US site seems to have a lot of treads about a 150cc gy6 swap but i could not find anything for us UK guys. The reason that this is important is that i am having trouble finding a good 150cc donor in the UK and most of those mentioned elsewhere on the site are not imported to the UK (or easily found in the UK). So, my question is... what is a good commonly found 150cc gy6 engined scoot in the UK ?

I have searched most of this site and could not find a suitable answer for us UK based Zoomer owners.

Has anyone in London done this? i would like the benefit of their experience.

Bandaar has a Grand Axis swap using a minarelli 100cc motor - think its bored to 110/115cc. This is not a GY6 - its far to pretty for that, andits a 2 stroke.

a GY^ is a chinese Copy of one of the honda original motors. They range from 100cc - to 250cc over here. Look out for any chinese branded scooter - you can pick a new Boatian up (for example) for around £600.

You'll need the wiring harness / ecu / whole back end so you really need to pick up a whole scoot. You will also need to purchase an American style gas tank as the swap will not work with our standard FI tanks.

If you want to swap with these, good luck!

cool i didnt know it was a 2stroke but your right too pretty for a GY6 :D how come our tanks wont work? something to do with delivary system? about the 2stroke do you have to premix everytime or can you get an oil tank to premix before it hits the carb?

Premix is safer as the stock oil pump may not supply enough oil to tuned engine.

GY6 looks like shite imho....and 2 strokes are way too much hassle.

Someone should try the Yamaha Cygnus X, T-Parts have started to sell the frame parts for this engine swap.

I dunno if I would say that 2-strokes are too much hassle, but then that's just my person viewpoint...

I've had (fingers-crossed) no worries with both stock (Gilera 180SP) and tuned (Malossi kitted Italjet Dragster 180) motors...

They're pretty strong and the 'tuning' steps are well known, documented and supported (parts, shops, people, etc)

Actually, these machines used the same basic motor (and electronics) and was taken from an ol' Piaggio Hexagon(could be wrong on that one?) design.

I've been tempted to get measuring, to see if there's enough space for a swap...

I saw this ad also. I am a bit sceptical of buying things direct from China, In my experience they never turn up and if they do they take ages. It certainly looks like the kind of thing i am after though.

I agree, i am not up for the hassle of a 2 stroke but was not aware that oil delivery might be an issue.

I like the idea of this Yamaha swap (dispite only being 125cc). A Yamaha engine is going to be far higher quality than the chinese or taiwanese crap (although they are cheap to replace if i did burn out).

You say someone has started selling frame mods for this swap? Can you provide the web link? i could not find it by searching.

Ideally i would still like the 150cc engine that will simply bolt in no problems (but then I suppose we are all looking for that)

Guys don't forget. Before you even entertain an engine swap you're gonna need better stopping power so I'd save for that first...

Cheers.

The engine swap kit seem very expensive at nearly £500 for, what looks to be, a couple of brackets and a rear spring. It would be cheaper to take it to an engineering place and get them made here in the UK.

You'd be suprised the cost of a one off like that.

The 2 aluminum spacers for my fatty were going to cost me £75 - I went to 8 different places and that was the cheapest quote i got. instead i bought some bowls ones for £50.

Moral being its not always cheaper - and will save you a ton of hassle + Zoomania products are top notch fuctionally designed. You aint modifeied unless your rocking at least 5 of their products on your scoot... WORD

Cygnus swaps.... Nice!
Image
The above has a T-Parts single-shock kit.

Image
This double-shock seems to be custom made, think it looks better (oh!! zoomania blasphemy) 'cept for the gay seat-back thing.

As far as the "dispite only being 125cc" goes...well if you want a super-bike, then f**k off and buy one.

I think that 150cc is far from being a super-bike but cheers for the pics. I agree the Cygnus swap looks pretty cool.
