Post subject: Stripped crank shaft variator nut thread, help!

Well I got a second hand polini variator from a guy on here, borrowed my mates impact gun and whacked that sucker on, all was great! 35 MPH! I was loving it! Then after about 2 weeks it started making a weird loose/scraping noise from that area when idling, which got progressively worse. So I borrowed his gun again to take the nut off and it started to come off then just span!!! I got a screw driver on the back of the kickstarter washer to prise it off and managed to gun it off while prising the kickstarter washer.

About half the threads for the nut have been shanked, also a weird issue is i couldnt get the back plate off the variator off, it kind of span on the shaft but was tight in spots and would not come off! It took two of us ten minutes with 3 screwdrivers in the slots to pry it off.

What can i do to get it back running again!? My mate said he will try cleaning up the thread and try to rethread it with this file thing but I need a new variator nut/washer and cant find them for sale anywhere! Also does anyone know how my nut got fucked in the first place and the variator black plate went weird?! Im thinking I must of overtightened it with the impact gun but i swear i only did it as much as the people in the youtube videos. I also pushed everything on like the videos and the kickstart washer was flush, none of the spindle stuff is fucked, only the thread for the nut.

Firstly, get a different variator, like Malossi, I had a bad experience with a Polini myself.

It's hard to say what went wrong, especially without being there or with pictures.

Just get yourself a nut, a decent variator and get it back together. Make sure the inner seal isn't damaged.

Just checked and its a 12mm nut should be able to pick one up from B&Q or somewhere like that. If that doesn't work then you can order one from Honda of Bournemouth:

If you still have the noise and it is about 25,000 miles it is probably the crank shaft bearings. Need to replace the crank shaft.
