LOST WITH MIKE
In May I quit my job as a cartographer in Arlington, VA, stored my BMW 1150GS and few possessions, and set out on my 2012 Honda Ruckus toward Key West. I made many updates and farkled my scooter just like a mini BMW. I was disillusioned by the pace of modern life, the culture of consumerism and the miniscule two weeks of vacation granted by US employment norms. To save money in the DC area, where rent averages $800-1500 for a one bedroom studio, I lived from July > May in an unheated Rubbermaid 8x10 shed in the yard to squirrel away money.
I've been travelling now for three weeks stopping often and visiting family in the SE. I stealth camp most nights and have years of experience sleeping in graveyards, behind churches and under picnic pavilions from dusk till dawn. The valuable friendships I've created and useful advice gathered from folks standing in their front yard or working on their farm has been remarkable. It truly is a vibrant and unique world out there when divested of the chains of employment. At age 27, this is my "first retirement" and I aim to make the most out of the next year or two on the road.
I have a website/blog which I have been updating photos and stories to from my iPhone. After the trip, I hope to combine my DSLR and point and shoot shots with my diary for either a book or ebook publication of some sort. The community on Total Ruckus and the vicarious living I've done through folks like Wan, Tae, Lukebunny and many others has inspired me greatly. The Ruckus just keeps on truck'n. Stay tuned for more!
Just a few parts and work I've done. I'm sure there is more missing here:
