Post subject: Acts out of gas but not out of gas.

My 2005 BR is giving me a headache with the carb. It has set in a garage for the past 5 years (long story which involves my ex wife) and I have cleaned the carb, tank and all the lines twice. Each time I put it back together and it runs GREAT... for about 120 to 140 miles then it leaves me high and dry on the side of the road. It cuts off like I have ran out of gas. I can turn it off and then it sit for a while and it will start, run for a minute and then off it goes again. Now that its home, I can hit the starter and give it a very very little gas and it will start but acts as if its flooded. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I have searched here and other places to no end. Any help you be greatly appreciated. :headbashing:

Thank,
Eric

You say you "cleaned the carb".... Did you REMOVE your jets? It sounds like your jets are partially plugged. If it is still stock, you should rejet, to 45 & 102.

Possibly stupid reply, but 140 miles is the maximum I can get between fill ups.
Is it out of petrol?

The symptoms you describe in your post are exactly those of an empty fuel tank. :ucrazy:

You don't mention filling up the tank...or what happens after you do.

"Acts out of gas, but not out of gas".... Until I fill it up again?

If it is a fuel delivery problem, you should hear a lot of "clicking" each time you turn the ignition on.....that's the fuel pump.
It's a pulse type pump and each click is a small spurt of fuel.
If you don't hear any clicks, then the fuel pump isn't pulsing.

That could be caused by a sticking float valve in the carb (back pressure shuts the pump off)
or a loose connection to the CDI unit that acts as the pump controller, giving it one pulse per spark cycle.

A couple of things I would try while troubleshooting this type of problem:
1) drain the carb bowl and then turn on the ignition.....you should hear lots of clicks as the pump refills the bowl.
2) replace the fuel filter.....it's not that expensive and water or debris inside the filter could be restricting fuel flow to the pump.
3) replace the spark plug.....at ~$4, it's cheapest critical component on the engine
4) carefully inspect the air filter....if it's oily or dirty, it can restrict air flow and make the mix too rich to run once warmed up....it's not so cheap.

More input needed....

Pure guess, faulty fuel pump relay.

Sunday's development

I took the bowl off and found some crud in it. Took the jets out and cleaned them again as well. I thought I did a great job of cleaning everything out the first TWO times. Yes, BRed I did get a new filter but not a plug...yet.

(did all this by only taking the side cover off and turning the carb to access the bowl)

I started it up and it seemed to run okay. Drove it up the drive and again it seemed to run okay. I let it idle for a minute and took it down my street. (I live on a hill) got up to 40 and it felt like it bottomed out. At the end of the street I turn around and head back up...20 mph. I'm guessing there's more crud somewhere. Then is dies. After my girl tows me home and park it and notice oil coming out of the drain tube in the rear of the air filter. WTH? I have yet to break into it again but I am guessing I pulled a vacuum line off when I turned the carb to access the bowl. (Found out the first time I took it off that if you cross some of the lines up, you get antifreeze into the carb and out that same vent.)

New motto: The jets will be clean when the engine says they are clean.

BTW: Pump seems to be pumping great.

Check your air filter.

The symptoms you describe sound suspiciously like an oil fouled air filter....
it idles ok, but bogs when given more throttle.

Did you change the oil recently?

I recently had exactly the same problem you have. I did a 48K service.
Replaced the belt and rollers and all the other stuff you do during this
service. Went for a test ride and it ran like you describe. Kept checking
my CVT but could find nothing wrong. Turned out it was a small tear in
the throttle slide tube, (they call it a vacuum piston in the parts fiche). Did not have anything to do with what I was doing, just a coincidence. But it did describe the way your's is acting. Just a thought.

Third time is the charm. Let's recap...

First time: cleaned the carb and lines.

Second time: I cleaned the carb, the lines and tank.

Third time: I dismantled the carb AGAIN (managed to strip every freaking screw on the carb. so I took BRed's advice and switched them to allen screws) I flushed the carb and all the lines... however this time I ran Chem-Dip thru the fuel pump over and over by turning the key on and off to engage the pump. Then flushed it with water then a quart of clean gas. Needless to say a crap load of crud poured out of the fuel pump. Put it all back together with a new filter and IT'S ALIVE!!!! Ran great...

but I still couldn't get it to pop a wheelie.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Let's see it I can get thru more than one tank of gas this time.

Eric

Got a whole 5 miles yesterday...... I'm done. I'm tired of being left on the side of the road. Going to the shop!

I spoke with the mechanic on he phone. He is thinking it may be "The Box" (11: TIMER UNIT on the electrical schematic). Any thoughts on that?

Still seems like a gas issue to me. (Wondering if the ex threw something the tank before she gave it back to me)

I hate ethanol!
