Anyone here have easy access to their BR's ECU ??

I'm checking to see if there are variations on the code stamped on the jacket....
it will look something like this:

KPBA ED
NE1X
3X30

this is the code for a Reflex ECU.

The BR and the Reflex (and a couple of hundred other 2K> Honda models?!) used the same OKI ECU ignition controller, sometimes called the "brain" and even though the appearance of these units are identical, the externally stamped alpha-numerical code reflects their actual internal programming code or "map".

I'm curious if there were any changes to the ECU during the BR's production run.

Being a sorta-kinda non-wrencher
um, where exactly would I find that code? Although, I could just get off my rump
and look in the service manual, but I am not sure what I would be looking for.

Thanks Ed

Hey Nikki, it won't be in the service manual, it'll actually be on the ECU itself. Meaning you'd have to take the bottom of the seat off, remove the retaining pins for the battery/wiring cover, pull out the ECU and check the #s on it.

Thanks, JimT.....
that's what I'm looking for.

Here are some pics to help locate the numbers, which are white lettering on upper left corner of the box.
(which, as Misty stated, is located under the seat in the front of the battery box enclosure)......

The above unit is also from a Reflex.

The following are off various VT1100 models from 2000-2006

MCKA A appears to be a VT1100 designation, as KPBA ED seems to be common to the Reflex......
within the same year series, the top two numbers are the same but the bottom number seems to change.....
I haven't figured out why, unless it's some sort of serialization.

the odd thing is, the BR seems to only use about half of the 22 pins in the harness?! :|

I've recently come into possession of a 2004 Reflex ECU........
I'm trying to get up the nerve to try it in one of the BRs.

First I have to make sure the pin outs and program match up close enough so that I don't fry the entire harness and ignition system by swapping them.

From what I've been able to learn, the program burned to each ECU is based on the final jetting used to meet the requirements of the specific emissions laws of the local market.....there may be differences in the ECUs within the same year models based on where it's sold.

Although there is a ton of information on the Internet on hacking Kawasaki and Yamaha ECUs, it seems no one has access to the adapter for the 22P OKI units that Honda used between 1998 and 2007......in order to hack it, you first have to develop an interface to convert the OKI 22P connector to an OBD1 or OBD2 connector that the available scanners and programmers can read. All commercial sales ECUs are optimized for highest fuel economy with lowest emissions, effectively detuning the bike by 10-15%. According to several sources, there are aftermarket race versions of the OKI ECU for some models sold through HRC that have a more agressive map.....these racing ECUs are very expensive (2-3 times the commercial version) and only available from Honda via HRC for "off road" or racing use only.

I'm particularly interested in seeing if the Canadian models use the same ECU version and map.....
if so, they will have the same code for the top two fields:

KFGH K
NE5N

I think the last field is some sort of serial numbering, with 5Y16 being something like the 25th unit (Y) produced on the 16th day of the 5th month?

That's just a wildass guess, but the 3rd field appears to be unique to each unit.......
