Post subject: Electric Starter - why won't you work?
PostPosted: Thu Jun 23, 2011 7:55 am
Hi Everyone,
I have a 2003 Ruckus and recently the electric starter stopped working. It's been a dreamboat of a bike up until now, although the kick start still works after a couple of goes. I had it tuned up this spring and they replaced the battery. A couple of weeks after that the starter stopped working. It click click clicks and then eventually stops. Took it back to the shop and they said probably one of the fuses was draining the battery. Has this happened to anyone out there? The mechanic said it would take him a while to test all the fuses individually and assess the problem but it's really bugging me and I'm prepared to sit down with a volt meter and get the job done if that's what it is.
Thanks in advance for your help guys.
Megan

Hi, megcass.

My starter has not worked consistently since I bought my Ruck. A new battery fixes it right up but the starter will eventually stop working...that leads me to believe that i have a slow power draw somewhere. I'm good with kicking it so I have never looked for the problem. Good luck!

It probably is the battery if you have not replaced it yet.

Thanks guys, it's not the battery - it's brand new. One of the electrical components is draining the battery even when the bike is turned off. Has anyone had this happen? Is there a common electrical problem I could look at?

I ran without a start button for a long long time because I had spliced wires together without soldering them. Once I redid all of my harness splices with solder, it started working every time. Anecdotal, I know, but perhaps a loose connection you could check?

Put the battery charger to her and start tracing. New battery doesn't mean better. DVOM is your friend.

You say click click and then nothing. Is that the bendix engaging the starter clutch but not enough juice to turn the crankshaft? If so, that'd lead me to believe that the power flowing to/from the starter is insufficent. Provide extra leads and see if remedy.

My Zumas were plagued with this until I replaced the leads with large gauge wire, respectively, to the starter as teh amp draw was too great.

Next is this battery drain you explain. Gonna be going circuit by circuit until you find the errant draw. I prefer to disconnect the ground lead on the battery and place a test light in between the batt and this lead. If you have light, there's a draw. Start pulling out the fuses one by one until the light goes out.

yes he has an issue with the electric start, no there is no starter motor or clutch on a GET, it sends power back into the stator instead
