Just picked up a '73 Trail 90 for $500. They are hard to come by with a title here, and this one had it. Unknown mileage (broken speedo cable) but it's complete aside from the tail lamp.
I had bought it with the intention of making a heavily customized bobber style bike, but it's in pretty straight shape as is, so I might just do a stock+ thing for the time being.
On the drive home from the other side of the island, I came down with a stomach flu. I had just enough energy to take it out of the truck and ride a circle around the yard before I needed to puke again.
At least I can still buy parts online :wasted:

Yesterday I tried to start it again and it started for a sec and died immediately. I pulled the carb and cleaned it. Turns out the PO put a new carb on it very recently. Install looked pretty halfassed; he had stuffed a foam filter in where the snorkel between the airbox and carb meet and never removed the snorkel. One of the bolt heads was stripped. Wiring all looks a bit wonky, and the plug boot damn near fell off the wire. Both wheels are a bit off center. I've come to the conclusion I need to do a pretty complete teardown to get everything put together right.

Between this and doing some reading, and I've decided I need to go custom. I'm thinkin ratty, low and fast.

I love the idea of a little trail rider, but I can pick up an unregisterable dirt bike to run trails for next to nothing here. Why waste a titled, street legal bike on that if it'll only do 50 on the street?

I get paid tomorrow and I'm gonna order new points, condenser and plug wire (boot is a brand new NGK). Gonna also do a radioshack rectifier and work on the spark advancer. Between that and the signals I should be running and street legal soon and the real work can begin

And so it begins...
Rigged up a hard tail out of the stock shocks by removing the springs. Gonna make some sleeves once I am able to get to the shop. I'm planning on using my leftover Mobylette rear fender for the front... needs a little chopping and some new tires first. Gonna lower the front, just need some time to do it.
Going for a low full fender'd look. Once I have the time I'm going to strip it down to bare metal and clear coat it. Got a NOS z50 tail lamp for the cause.

I love having my own place! I just moved in a few days after buying the bike, and have been able to get up at sunrise and work on this thing for an hour or two before work. Awesome. Should have to to bare frame by the time I have to go to work this morning... Then it's time for the paint stripper. :highfive:

I started out thinking "I'll just add some turn signals and ride..."
Fat chance.
