Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed! :headbashing: I went out yesterday to go for a ride, and as soon as I turned the key on, my Dynatek CDI went up in smoke. I removed it and switched the wires back to stock, and she fired right up, so I took off. About 15 minutes into my ride the Temp light came on, which it had never done before. I let it cool for a bit and rode home about half throttle, it never came on again. I'm not saying there's any connection between the two things, I don't see how there could be, just coincidence.
I checked my coolant level, it's full, no sign of a leak. It's never been low on coolant, so I don't suspect air bubbles. I'm thinking the most likely culprit is a stuck thermostat. I checked out the location of the 'stat housing, just a quick look, and there's very little room to work in that area. Would it be easier to remove the water pump for easy access to the thermostat, or not?

Yes..remove the complete housing but of course you will have to drain your coolant..

If you want to check the electrical side of things..remove the wire from the sensor and just ground it out..I BELIEVE that will short the circuit and cause the light to come on..

Personaly I run without a t-stat and it actually improved performance :banger: :banger:

Thanks, Slim. :highfive: I haven't had the chance to mess with it yet, but I took the floorboard off and had a quick look-see. I thought that might be the best way to go.

So you run without a stat, and it improved performance? I'd thought about that, but was a little concerned about getting up to operating temp in cold weather. My ruck has always ran better once it's fully warmed up. But, Masshole gets colder than Mizz-ery, so if it works for you, it should work for me. :meh:

less drag on the water pump + less drag on the engine = free rev'n 49cc beast :banger:

but I had an overheating issue myself..Once I would go downhill and hit speeds near 55..and the start my climb back up hill..then it would overheat and hit the limp mode..

checked everything..even swapped out the w/p to check..so I just removed the therm and it didn't overheat..checked temps with a temp gun and it was fine..

I even straight water with RedLine WaterWetter..I've been running fine since

oldfart, did you fix this problem or did you remove the Thermostat?

I had my bike complety taken apart for paint and thougth i might as well put up some fansy pants silicone radiator hoses.. so i did and i have refilled the coolant, but the engine keeps overheating. i drained it one more time and refilled it and tried bleeding but still overheating..

thinking either my pump is focked or the Thermostat..

Yeah, I replaced the thermostat, refilled the coolant and burped it, and that solved the problem. Been fine ever since.

other than letting the bike idle for 1-3 minutes and 3 snaps on the throttle :) i tried shaking the bike, lifting it up behind tilting it.. naaathing helped

It seemed to me like it didn't get warm enough from just idling to open the thermostat. I rode it hard around the block a few times with the rad. cap loose (the actual radiator cap, not the reservoir cap). That seemed to get all the air out. (I took a pint bottle of coolant with me just in case it hit limp mode, but didn't need it). Refilled it and rode some more with the cap loose. Level stayed up, so I figured it was successfully "burped".

Tried a other thermostat from a engine i got extra. Same problem.

Even changed the ect sensor.

Still same fuking problem.

Any suggestions?

Gonna try resetting the ECU next.

Then im gonna try a other ECU.

Mine was difficult to burp once. I stick a cynder block under the frame and bleeped the throttle for 30 minutes and then :barf:

How do you see wether or not the thermostat is open or not?

You can kinda tell by taking the rad cap off and watching the fluid. The coolant doesn't circulate thru the radiator until the 'stat opens. Once it opens, you should be able to see movement in the coolant. Also, the coolant in the radiator will be room temp until the 'stat opens, then it will start getting hot.

If everything was fine until you changed hoses, I can't help but think that you've got air in the system. :meh: Remove the rad cap and ride it for 10-15 mins.

Is it going into limp mode?
