If an engine breaths in better it has to breath out better. Performance 101. The fact that your considering a PIECE OF SHIT LAWN MOWER canister just caused you to lose all credibility. Invest in a real exhaust or enjoy your slow bike. Need aftermarket exhaust to reach higher speeds. Exhaust helps a lot when tuned properly.

Harry, your issue is you DONT have enough power to push past 45MPH/9krpms. GET rid of your stock airbox and start tuning. and if your on stock exhaust, get (an) exhaust too.
...

I have been thinking about the exhaust but am wondering really how much ill gain thru one as Ive heard its not much as offset to the amount of noise itll make as I like my bike quiet(nosy cops). There seems to be a large faction that say that the aftermarket exhaust is not worth the extra money, plus there seems to be lack of proof that the exhaust does anything besides making the bike louder. I have been researching this tirelessly with no sucess as I was looking at a BR B&S kit as its small and out of the way.

The stock intake and stock exhaust both limit power as the revs climb. The GET motor is basically and air pump, with 2 of the 4 strokes extracting heat energy from as much air as you can get thru it (mixing in fuel with the proper proportion). More air thru the motor means more power potential, and higher revs means more air flow, up to the point the ports and valves become restrictive.
---
I too, wondered how much more power was available from a "loud" aftermarket exhaust compared to the stock exhaust, so ran back-to-back dyno runs with the intake modified, rejetted, and Polini already tuned.
(See graphs below- Red line is loud aftermarket exhaust, Blue line is stock exhaust)
The results of the test showed 1/4 to 1/2hp at peak, or about 10-20%. The loud exhaust's power spread and steady pull to higher revs improved acceleration and top speed though. An extra .5-.6hp should be good for 4-5mph, depending on load and current top speed. Notice that the stock exhaust made 3.0hp at 40mph, and the Yosh exhaust made ~3.6hp at 45mph. Running the stock exhaust, I might have been able to trade off some of the 15mph power to improve the 40-45mph power (with CVT tuning), but the acceleration would be sacrificed for the modest gain in top speed.

Aftermarket exhaust is just one figure added up with the rest of the supporting mods to help you go faster.

Con: Thoughts on needle shim and how it relates?

I haven't done a needle shim but people seem to really vouch for it.
I know it is not necessarily something that would help with speed, but I want to get your input on it within the parameters of GET faster 101.

No Need. Needle shimming was good back when we were limited by CVT components and it was hard to get a little extra fuel in the 7000-8000rpm range. Now with as much stuff for CVT and information, you can tune the CVT properly so the RPMs never dip under 8k which is what you want.

That and a correctly installed diaphragm vent tube to intake, your set. If anything In midrange I was running to rich and had to lean it out a bit with stiffer diaphragm spring.

You're welcome, The exhaust impact was a question I wanted to answer for myself too.
My exhaust was louder than I liked too, so attached a turned-down tip on the end. At least it directs some of the sound downwards. A small amount of baffling and re-directing at the tip with a more open exhaust shouldn't be much of an impact for this motor.

If you think the MAIN jet is too small, try reducing the air at the inlet to the air-box or filter and see if power improves at FULL THROTTLE. Throwing some masking tape over the air intake only takes a few seconds for the evaluations.

If no improvement is found, then there isn't a need to richen the main jet. On the other hand, if a noticeable improvement is made at full throttle, then try increasing the main jet and retest.

Shortly I'm going to remove a bunch of posts from this thread. Just an FYI.

Edit-I hope I didn't offend anybody but I cleaned up a lot of talk, comments, and about a dozen boxes of popcorn. Since this thread was made a Sticky let's TRy to refrain from comments and questions here. Ask questions about your setup in your Members Ride thread or another appropriate place.
Thank you everbodies for my supports.!!!

Just for my own personal Curiosity;

After all is said and done how fast did your Ruckus go after all these mods? And at what cost?

The fastest I have ever personally achieved on my personal Met:
Stock bore: 60mph @10320
Big Bore: 62mph @10,200

Buddies Ruckus (Lighter rider): Tuned by me
Stock bore: 60mph
Big Bore: 64mph

Cost is irrelevant bc most of my parts I bought second hand and 80% of the work I have done to my bike as well as all the bikes i ton is in the custom stuff i do. Modifying every little thing in my CVT, Custom this and shaved that. WAAAAY to much to list.

Pretty good speed for all those mods I have to agree. For me that's way too much work and money for my Ruckus. I'm good with totally stock. Thanks for the response. :banger:

yeah. I wasn't sure how to respond to that either.

On the one hand, maybe Ron has a hot 26 year old chick.

On the other hand he can be talking about something else entirely.

But pics would help us figure out just what the hell he's talking about.
