I have a 2009 Honda Ruckus with 7,700 miles on it. It has a polini variator and a daytona kevlar belt along with michillin bopper tires. My top speed has fallen from 42mph to 37 mph and I do not understand why. I change the oil every 2,500 miles and change spark plug every 5,000. Any Ideas? Thanks

I'm running the NGK CR9EH-9 spark plug. Was thinking about changing to the E3 plug, but the search function in this forum will not let me look up the number I need. Anyone know? also what do I gap it at? I just do not understand why my top speed fell from 42mph to 37mph without me doing or changing anything. Any Ideas?

i've only used the CRE8... -9 also if the belt is new... it needs some time to brake-in about 100miles.
tire pressure 30psi-40psi for both. Check your oil level- fill it so that it just registers on the dipstick.
Change your Gear Oil, use a 150mL syringe with a little hose- you should be able to take out at least 100mL
My ruck loves oil changes w/ new plug so the second I notice a drop in performance I knock it out.

The belt is not new, and I just got back from pumping up the tires to 40psi and testing it out. I'm up to 38mph top speed. Anyone have better performance with the e3 plug? and what number do I need and what do I gap it at? Thanks

How old is the belt? How old are the rollers? Have you checked them lately? (they may be worn)
Did the change happen suddenly? (what else was different that day/time?)
Or over time? (<suggests it's normal wear of replaceable components)

Someone on here has used the E3 plug and said it didn't make much difference. I just searched on "E3 plug" and got over 12,000 hits -- try again!

A 2009 with 7700 miles and oil changes every 2500 miles? That's like 3 oil changes in 6-7 years. It's a pretty tough engine but I'd recommend at least once a year oil change.

Difficult to diagnose any issue with the info provided. Did the speed drop suddenly or after you added the variator/belt/tires? Were you riding it daily? What have you checked?

Checked the oil. It was at the top of the dipstick so I drained some of the oil so it registers just above the first set of xxx. Checked the air filter. It is clean. Took it out for a test ride and noticed no difference. It still will only hit 38mph. The loss of top speed was gradual over a month or two. I bought the Ruckus used and the the polini variator and daytona belt was already installed. I think it was put on at about 2,500 miles. The scooter now has 7,700 miles on it. I do not know much about it. I drive it every day. Not sure what it might be. Any clue? Thanks,

I have only owned the 2009 Ruckus for 1 year. I bought it with 4,500 miles already on it. It now has 7,700 miles. I changed the plug and oil as soon as I got it because I did not know when the previous owner changed it, then i changed the oil at about 7,000-7,500 miles. What makes you think it is the carb? It is not sputtering and at top speed the engine humms right along. It just tops out at 38mph and cars whizz by me. I would like to at least get it back to where it was at 42mph so I can keep with the flow of traffic. Thanks,

Any time things start slowing down a likely suspect is the carb. It supplies gas to the engine, anything going on there is going to effect the engine's performance. The jets in there are tiny. Any little bit of gunk can have a big effect. If it's got almost 8k miles on it, the carb may never have been cleaned and it could have some significant gunk.

I love my Ruckus, but I don't feel like monkeying with the carb. Does anyone else have any other ideas or should I sell it and get a Yamaha Zuma 125? Thanks

Just sell it now. You will have to clean the carb eventually, if not now.

I'd buy a whole new engine, carb, and gas tank. Should get you right back up to 42.
