It might not be a fisheye. I looked at it a few times and I think it's just a panoramic composite shot with a fairly wide angle lens. It doesn't quite have the vertical distortion that most fisheyes do, unless it's been really cropped down.

I agree though, it looks pretty sick.

It was shot with a 180deg Fisheye lens on an indexed tripod, with two shots 180 degrees apart... then with software, you can straighten the images out quite a bit, which is what was done with those pics... and then with a bit of Java, you can tie the two pics together, and make it look like a 360-deg rotating picture... which is what i got those pics off of... the + and - symbols are there cause you could zoom into the pics a bit to.

Well, today was all about a little less welding, and a little bit more of "making things work".

So i finally got the pieces in my hand from the machinist that i've been talking about... so, i had to make this front hub work!

Here is the situation... i wanted front disk brakes, and matching wheels. The rear wheel that i'm going to be using is from an ATV, and the only way to get a matching wheel for it, is to use ATV parts in the front. Well, seems simple enough, but ATV front wheels are designed COMPLETELY different than our conventional front wheels, in regards to how the bearings mount, and what kind of bearings they use.

On our front wheels, they use two normal bearings that crush a sleeve, and then you tighten down a bolt that pushes in on more spacers, that basically tightens the whole unit up until it is basically one solid unit from side-to-side... then, the bearings have no side-load on them, and it rolls similar to a skateboard or rollerblade wheel.

The ATV front hube though only mount to the spindle on one side... so, they use tapered bearings, with a solid mount spindle on one side, and then a nut on the other side... then, you torque down the nut to a specific torque setting, and because of the taper in the bearings, they hold themselves into the hub rather nicely.

The only problem with this setup, is that for our purposes, it'd be great if i was doing a single-sided front fork assembly, but i'm not (don't rule that out on future builds though). So, i had to figure out a way to make this work.

Well, in the ATV hubs, the tapered bearing seat is pressed into place.... here is a picture showing how the taper sits... at this point i had already pressed it out of the hub, so it is sitting higher than it normally would be, but you get the idea...

Hub and Bearing Seats (inner and outer)

So, i had to come up with an ingenious plan to make this work... Originally i was going to build an elaborate axle, and basically over engineer things... but then i finally put down the silly sauce, and got smarter Smile

So, i designed some new bearing carriers in CAD, and sent the drawings off to my machinist, and today he came back to me with these sweet babies:

I was now ready to make the wheel work!

So, first thing i had to do, was make a spacer for between the bearings:

Then, went over to the press to start the install process...

Placed the first bearing in the carrier:

Then in it went

Then the big step, pressing that carrier into the ATV hub... no turning back now Smile

And there ya go!

Then it was time for the other side... this was done differently, where the seat is pressed in first, then the bearing. Assembly-wise, it makes sense to do it this way.

Then, in the sleeve goes:

Then, time for the bearing!

Now its time to TEST FIT!

As you can see of course, it is a NICE disk brake setup that i'm going to be able to use. It is designed to sit very nicely inside the wheel, so fitment-wise, this should look killer when i get the caliper and wheel in place!

I also got a box of parts from PasswordJDM in today... this Ruck will be using their Carbon Fiber Battery Box:

And also, the Carbon Fiber Front Fender!

Hopefully will be able to get back to actual fab work tomorrow... i had a lot of things backed up from the last couple of days due to the house hunt that had to get done today, so this is all i was able to get done on the Ruck Smile

Oh, if anyone is interested in this front wheel solution, i have a really good price going on the front hubs, and i had extra bearing carriers made at the machine shop, so this is something that is available for purchase Wink

I just want to know what you are going to use for forks, and if they would be adaptable (with some work understandably so) with Dio-type wheels and disk brakes?

What holds the bottom of the battery box together? It seems to be missing the little clips that are normally there. I'm sure you have something figured out, I'm just curious.

robbieruckus: Thanks! you probably shouldn't expect much during the weekends from me... lol! That is my time of zen, and relaxation. This weekend it is also a time of packing, and getting ready for my move.

loopy: well, i imagine that it bolts up just like the stock box, and if it doesn't, then i dont think making a couple of tabs will be that difficult of a thing to make happen. I'll cross that bridge when i get there.

sanjuro: first? what, are you buying one to? lol! sweet! the BB is niiice.

lite: I never really said that i was going to be using different forks than stock... but as for adapting anything to a dio wheel, i honestly have no idea, since i don't own a set of those wheels or brakes... i'm not building this to mate up to anything but the ATV wheel as seen in the above pics Wink

I think LiteW8 is asking if these ATV hubs/wheels will work with the aftermarket Dio forks that everyone is using.

Aaaahh.... well, this particular ATV setup was designed to mate up to the stock forks... however, anything is possible, and i'm sure that changes could be made to actually allow for that.

However it probably won't happen without me getting a set of the Dio forks and brake caliper in my hands, so that i can make the appropriate adjustments to the design, and then get the right parts made for it so it would match up. It is defintiely something that i'm willing to help develop if there is someone interested.

This setup wouldn't be 'cheaper' in cost than the Dio setup, thats for sure... so i wouldn't be looking at it as a cost-savings thing... but its different... and for those that care to be different, it may be right up their alley. Especially when i get done with the matching rear a little bit down the road... oh, did i say that out loud? Razz
