Thanks! Ya, it wasn't a lot of work, so the update sorta sucks i guess, but i HAD to do SOMETHING on it today .. I'm trying to get something accomplished every single day ... but i also had to build a header today, modify and weld up a fuel rail and some other small parts, and do a ton of paperwork in the office... so i didn't have much time today to do anything big to the Ruck But this had to get done sooner or later, so its at least progress.
Oh, i DID have a chance to weld to the aluminum i cut off the chassis as well... this aluminum SUCKS! In fact, it sucks SO BAD to weld to it, that it may change a couple of the plans that i had for it. I can't stand crappy aluminum welds, and this stuff has sooooo much shit in it, its like an instant contamination as soon as you fire up the torch... naaaaaasty _________________ John.W

VA: Ya, so did i... but with the metal welding like it is, i don't think the neck will be strong enough after the mods... I'm going to try again on a thicker piece later, but i have a feeling the results will be the same. _________________ John.W

Ok, so i was setting up for welding some aluminum anyway, so i figured i'd give it another go... this time, i cut out a piece of aluminum sheet, and "boxed in" one side of the lower tank mount that i cut off earlier, rather than just welding a bead on the cast like i did yesterday...
The idea was to mimic some of the welding that i plan on doing, like boxing in the front neck area, the lower floor, the upper frame rails, etc...
My biggest concern is that it is not only welding clean, but also that once done, i'll be able to smooth the weld out, so that the average person can't distinguish between the cast portion and the welded on sheet portion.
So, i cut the section, welded it, and then smoothed it out, and painted it so i could see what it might look like a little bit better....
And here is what i got....
There was still some porosity in the weld, as you can see here... but i think i can control that enough, or maybe even re-weld those sections to fill it in. Im going to be powdercoating this frame, so it can't have any holes like that, cause i can't just use body filler to fill them in...
SO.... i'm going to continue with at least PART of my planned modifications to the aluminum frame... but i don't think i am going to continue with the structural mods like i was going to do... not without some other major structural changes. _________________ John.W

The guy that welded the bung to my stainless yoshi is quite the miracle worker so I trust him when he tells me stuff. Anyways, he mentioned that nowadays they can even powdercoat certain plastics with powders that melt in temperatures low enough not to damage the plastic. I showed him the scratch on my frame from when I made a slide on the tarmac, he said I could use filler and then have it powdercoated.. I wasn't buying it but he said they can do a lot nowadays with powdercoating.
So perhaps it's something to look into, maybe not the shop next door that might be able to do it though.. _________________ Second big Zoomer ride in the Netherlands, check the video here

| there is also a special metal filler that you can get from eastwood for powdercoating over. |

Ok, so today i worked on another project most of the day, so i wasn't able to get much done other than test-weld that aluminum piece earlier today...But, i did get the tire in for this project... now i just need to get a new front tire, and i'll be set!
It is a 205/50-10 rear tire... i'm not completely final on this tire size yet, but its a start. Having now seen it in person, i sorta want something a touch bigger for this project, but we'll see how it all works out. My other Ruck still needs a rear tire to... hehe!
Here is a pic of the new rear tire
