I used to love my MIG, just changed the the liner (on mine that was easy) and gas when switching back and forth, it was a 5 minute job ( mine was a cheap Harbor Freight that I used daily for 7-8 years then a little less for about 3 years after that, was so lucky to find that thing, was so much better than the Snap off they had at my job). never needed the spool thing as I just rigged a tube in to it so the wire ran smooth, I love the look of TIG better but just never had the skill for stick welding to do that kind of work (think I could w/ a mig though). The MIG was easy for me. God I miss welding. Sad
Nice Fab Very Happy

VA: haha! Yea man, the angle grinder rules. I have an arsenal of flap disks, cutting wheels, grinders for every kind of metal on the planet, and enough wire wheels to de-rust the titanic.... lol! that grinder gets used for nearly everything... especially when an odd cut has to happen, or like the large 1/4" plate in my last set of pictures, it had to be trimmed down, and an arc cut into it. I don't have the patience to sit on my vertical bandsaw for 30 minutes making that cut into the stainless plate, so i used the angle grinder to make the cut, then used the angle grinder with flap disks to round the edges, smooth it out, and make it clean again. I also used it a lot on those trailing arm carriers.... used it to smooth out the frame, and cut off the lower tank holder... and i'll probably continue to use it to build 90% of this Ruck... haha!

As for Lincoln... i love their welders. I have used Millers as well, and the only thing i really like about Miller, is the pedal. It just seems much 'beefier'... but the welder i primarily use is an OLD Lincoln... i think it is older than i am.. haha! But it was the very first model with thier 'square wave' technology. It has all the options you could ever ask for, weighs in at about 500lbs or so, and it noisy as hell... complete opposite from the new inverter machines. BUT... i know that i can hit that button, and it'll work... no ifs ands or buts... can't say the same thing about the newer inverter machines. I also have a small air-cooled setup that i use when i need something more mobile... it only wieghs about 100lbs... the small unit is good to 150 amps, my BIG welder is good to about 375~ amps... and if i ever ran it that high, i'd melt all of my welding cables.. hahaha!

I'd say that if you are going to do a lot of aluminum welding, get watercooled. So far, all of the welding done on this Ruckus has been done with my air-cooled setup, and it has not caused me any issues with the handle being too hot (which is what the watercooling is there for.... that, and if you are doing HIGH amp welding, it'll keep the power cable from melting too fast.. Laughing ) So basically no, i do not think that watercooling is necessary for the hobbyist-welder Wink

most tig and mig welders penetrate about the same however mig industrial welding (the kind of mig used to weld bobcats, tractors etc.) penetrates deeper than tig and has the highest deposition rates (layes down metal faster). i guess what i was saying was that most of us can't afford a mig welder let alone a tig welder. when i recommend things to people on this forum i keep in mind what people can afford, and what people are capable of doing. tig takes a lot more time to learn and a lot more $.

i'll say it again and be more clear for those that don't know... tig is used most often with thinner materials where you can spend more time and where a clean weld is needed SUCH AS exhausts and thinner cosmetic pieces. tig is also best for structural pieces where strength is paramount. (not really applicable for rucks except maybe making an engine mount) while tig CAN be used for anything, when doing a lot of welding, it takes longer.

if you can afford it and have the time to master it, tig is MOST definitely superior. that's why i said i wish i could afford one!

ahhhh yes, i'll agree about the angle grinder as well. i've told everyone on this forum that they NEED an angle grinder. in fact EVERY man needs one!!!

btw composi when i need something tigged i'm sending it to you. most of the stuff i do is smaller so shipping ain't shit. i'd rather pay you to tig, someone apart of our community, rather than billy joe down at the "'ol weldin' shop"

Not much got done today, as i had other projects that required my attention... i am also waiting for the new rear tire i'm going to be using to show up tomorrow, so that i have a better idea of my exact measurements for the rear-end of this thing... so i couldn't do much with the swingarm section... so i went looking at the front aluminum section again... and decided it was time to do some more mundane trimming and smoothing Smile

This time, the target was the side rails that hang the tank, and mount the stock floorboard. I am going to be doing something slightly different with all of this, so i didn't need that huge ugly flange sitting there doing nothing... so, it was time to TRIM!

I laid the Ruck on her side, and went to work.

First cut along the rail using my trusty Dewalt angle-grinder with a cutoff wheel

Almost theeere!

And off she goes!

WHat it looked like after the cut

Then, i installed the flap disk on the grinder, and began smoothing everything out so that it looked really nice and smooth

Comparing before and after ( right and left sides)

Time to do the other side!

The finished product!

Smooooooooth! Cool
